Advisory Team

Our advisory team includes a consultant neurosurgeon, Prof. Rick Schuurman (Academic Medical Centre, Amsterdam), Dr. Gislin Dagnelie (Wilmer Eye Institute, Baltimore), and our patient consultant, Jens Naumann.

Prof. Rick Schuurman is Professor of Neurosurgery at the Academic Medical Center, Amsterdam, Netherlands, specialising in deep brain stimulation for patients with Parkinson’s and obsessive compulsive disorder. He is a neurosurgeon at the OLVG Hospital, Amsterdam, and is the President of the Dutch Society for Functional Neurosurgery in Movement Disorders.

Prof. Dr. Gislin Dagnelie is Associate Professor of Ophthalmology in the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and associate director of the Lions Vision Research and Rehabilitation Center, a division of the Wilmer Eye Institute. He has been the Principal Investigator for clinical trials of the Second Sight Argus™ 2 retinal implant (2007-present). His studies include patients with retinal prostheses.

Jens Naumann is the former employee and the first blind patient to be implanted in the Dobelle Institute’s 2002-2004 Artificial Vision programme, and the author of Search of Paradise, a rich autobiographical account of the experience. As an active member and representative of the international blind community, he provides our consortium with advice on the technical, ergonomic, and practical aspects of the device.
